On the Greek island of Crete, one does not measure success by the mileage you travel per day. Instead, success in is measured by the elevation pedaled over its steep mountains; the feta cheese and fresh seafood devoured; how much raki you drink after your meal, the snorkel sessions taken in the Libyan Sea, and the number of goats counted per day.
Having attempted many European bike vacations over the years, Adam and I found Crete to be our favorite location for beaches, bikes, and food in Europe this far. To top it off, we found the Creten people to be the friendliest and most passionate in all of Europe.
I was pleased with the route I managed to link together for our bike tour in Crete. When I have more time, I would really like to write a route guide for this bike route. In the meantime, enjoy some of our photos and check out the route we rode while listening to Horos Tou Zorba (Zorba’s Dance) by Mikis Theodorakis (whose recent passing was honored throughout Crete during our visit.) Feel free to email me if you have questions about riding there in the future.
